THE PROBLEM

The scarcity of water affects 40% of the world´s population. Every day about 1000 children under 5 die from water-related illnesses. By 2030, half of the world's population will live in regions with water access issues, and currently almost 700 million people live without access to clean water. Ecuador is one of the countries that suffers from this problem.

¿WHO?

Hello! My name is Javi, and I am a full-time Spanish traveler, and I am involved with solidarity initiatives as much as possible.

During the last 2 weeks of August, I volunteered with 'Ayuda en Acción' and 'The Water Van Project', in a project that consisted of the delivery of 175 water purification filters (explanatory video on the filter), for families and schools that do not have access to drinking water, located in the Pucará region, south of Ecuador.

Find more about this event in a press release they published in a local newspaper:  https://www.eltiempo.com.ec/noticias/region/12/pucara-proyecto-agua-javier-godinez

WHAT IS THE OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE OF THIS CAMPAIGN?

Although this volunteering has been one of the most rewarding and intense traveling experiences I have experienced, there is still much to be done. In the Pucará region there are still 13 communities, in which a total of 422 families live, without access to potable water. And for 319 of these families, the reception of a purifying filter is the only option to have drinking water, either because very few families live in a given community, because they are not prioritized at a political level or because the works of the drinking water have a very high cost (some have a budget of more than 200,000 dollars).

The average income per family unit in the affected regions is $ 140 per month, which makes it difficult for them to afford the cost of the filter, which is $ 60 per unit.

That is why I have decided to organize a series of solidarity events in the city of Cuenca (about 3-4 hours by car from the communities); in addition to several crowdfunding campaigns in Spain and Ecuador, with the aim of raising the funds needed to buy the filters

Therefore we need contributions to make this project a reality.

WHAT WILL WE DO WITH DONATIONS IF WE ACHIEVE THE GOAL?

If we reach the goal we will distribute a filter per family unit, and also in schools, contributing to improve health conditions (especially in relation to child malnutrition) of affected families.

WHAT WILL WE DO WITH THE DONATIONS IF WE DO NOT ARRIVE TO THE GOAL?

In case of not reaching the goal, the filters that become possible with the available funds will be purchased, and will be prioritized among the families with the greatest need.ç

WHAT WILL WE DO WITH DONATIONS IF WE OVERCOME THE GOAL?

If the goal is exceeded, the remaining funds will be saved for a future action in another area of, Ecuador, since the problem of shortage of drinking water affects several areas of the country, and it is expected to replicate these actions so that little by little the problem can be eradicated.

WHAT ARE THE FOUNDATIONS THAT SUPPORT ME AND WHAT ARE THEIR FUNCTION?

This initiative will be carried out in coordination with Ayuda en Acción, a cooperation organization of international dimension located next to those who suffer the greatest vulnerability. Its primary task is to improve the living conditions of children, families, and communities in the poorest countries and regions, through self-sustainable projects of integral development and awareness-raising activities, with the ultimate goal of fostering structural changes that contribute to the eradication of poverty.

Ayuda en Acción was born in 1981 and currently has around 120,000 employees who support the work of the organization in 19 countries in Latin America, Asia, and Africa, including Spain. You can see more information on its website: https://ayudaenaccion.org/

My task as the promoter of the initiative is to raise the necessary funds, through the organization of several charitable events in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador; negotiate with all the actors involved to reduce costs; as well as the creation of crowdfunding campaigns like this one. While Ayuda en Acción is my support at the destination, thanks to which I will be able to deliver the help to the families that need it the most.

TRANSPARENCY COMMITMENT

Both the project and the collection will have total transparency, and all the advances will be published in real time on Social Networks: Instagram, Facebook and on the solidarity project website: https://viajadisfrutayayuda.com

Volunteers and other people involved in the project do not have any kind of economic benefit, and are contributing their time and knowledge to make this project a reality, and that  difficulties of access to drinking water become something of the past.

All help however small counts ... so if you can, I ask you to please contribute your drop to help all families in this region to have access to clean water.

ABOUT THE PAYMENTS

  • The cost of a filter is 49.95 US dollars, but you can contribute with the amount you want since all the droplets add up.
  • Payment is made through a secure platform
  • 100% of the collections will be invested in the purchase of the filters (we will attach the invoices)

OTHER WAYS TO HELP

Are you ready to contribute with your drop? If for whatever reason you cannot contribute economically, do not worry. You can also share this campaign amongst your friends to help this initiative reach more people, or you can help by participating in the face-to-face events we will do in Cuenca.
